The Cornish-Mexican Cultural Society was established in 2006 with the objectives of fostering and promoting the historic cultural ties between Cornwall and Mexico and in particular the State of Hidalgo and the municipalities of Pachuca and Real del Monte and enabling the re-establishment of cultural links between the two great mining districts. The forerunner of the Society was the Cornish Mexican Twinning Association which was formed in 2001. The Association organised and hosted the 2001 meeting and visit.
Major celebrations were held in Mexico in July 2008 when the town of Redruth, Cornwall twinned with Real del Monte, Hidalgo State and a Friendship agreement was signed between Camborne, Cornwall and Pachuca, Hidalgo.
The visit followed the route of the Transport Party of 1825-26 arriving at Real del Monte on Miners Day.
The Transport Party brought the machinery of the industrial revolution to Latin America. Taking a year the Transport Party carried 1,500 tons of equipment from the open beach at Moncamba to the mines of Real del Monte, a feat of endurance remembered in the history books of Mexican schoolchildren.
This initiative was endorsed by the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Office and Europamines (the European Mining Heritage Network) and is supported by:
The British Embassy, Mexico; The State Government of Hidalgo; The Municipality of Pachuca; The Municipality of Real del Monte; The British Society, Mexico; Amistad Británico-Mexicana
Redruth Town Council; Camborne Town Council; Redruth School; Camborne School and Community College
